PALMETTO BEACH – South of Ybor City

South of US60 and Ybor City is the peninsular that houses a large share of the Port of Tampa, including the shrimp docks along the 22nd Avenue Causeway.  On the northern limits of this area is PALMETTO BEACH, founded as a subdivision of Tampa/Ybor City.  Originally planned as a recreational resort complete with a racetrack, the area became a close-knit neighborhood of small bungalows and cigar workers houses dotted with an occasional old cigar factory.  Its isolation from most of the urban traffic make the area quite quiet and almost rural in its atmosphere.  The beach where Ybor clubs used to play and picnic is part of DeSoto Park.
